Kaiut Yoga and Long-COVID

This article was written in August 2021 for the American Association for Respiratory Care. The intention was to promote education for Respiratory Therapists to help support people managing long-term symptoms from COVID-19. The information shared can support anyone who is managing long-term symptoms from COVID-19, more recently referred to Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC).

What is most interesting to all is how through this population, education has been growing about how important it is to support and take care of our nervous systems. For some people, the virus seems to be attacking the body’s own neuroplasticity causing a cascade of often misunderstood symptoms. The most common symptoms at this time are fatigue, shortness of breath, and brain-fog. What we are seeing is that exertion and stress can trigger these symptoms, sometimes leaving people with extreme fatigue, unexplained shortness of breath, and difficulty with cognition that can last for days.

As research continues to grow, we are supporting people’s nervous system in news ways, most of which are focused on supporting the body’s ability to balance the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic side of the Autonomic Nervous System. This is where my passion as a Kaiut Yoga teacher and Respiratory Therapist blends well together. What I am seeing through my work is that if they are able to practice Kaiut Yoga, they are able to access a safe way to practice what it feels like to be in balance. We create a memory, or promote neuroplasticy in a positive way. Hope you enjoy!
